A New Era

People have been whooping, hollering, and dancing in the streets. The text messages are still coming at a rapid pace…Oh, Happy Day (11.07.20). My husband, daughter, and I were hugging and high-fiving. As we talked with my 94-year old mother via Facetime, we were confirming that it’s a fresh new start for America as President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris. The people have chosen decency over dysfunction, hope over fear, empathy over cruelty, unity over division. This is an opportunity to refocus our efforts on the opportunities that lie ahead for America and its people. As we enter a new era, the fight for truth, justice, and reconciliation is not optional. It is essential.

Kamala Harris also made history as the first Black woman, the first women of South Asian descent, and a graduate of a historically black colleges and universities to become vice president, an achievement that comes as the U.S. faces a reckoning on racial justice. Kamala Harris has shattered the glass ceiling for generations to come. It’s about time. For my daughter and other young women like her and little girls who are bearing witness to this historic moment, may you be inspired to be boundary-pushers as you pursue your goals.

The Biden-Harris team are ready to restore the soul of America and unite us. Whether you voted for the vision or not, it’s time for our collective healing. Healing will require disinfecting our wounds, not ignoring them. Doing the right thing will define us. There’s so much to look forward to.
